A SERIES ON GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD

Though I had long dreamed of the movies, and who made them, my going to Hollywood was perhaps the most unlikely story of all. The United States Navy ORDERED me to go there. That’s where my journey into the magic of Hollywood began.

How I Got To Hollywood

It took sheer luck and a bit of horse trading for me to end up in Hollywood. As an officer with the US Navy, I was assigned to make certain that, if the Navy was involved in any way, that there was total authenticity in every film and or television show.

When Was The Golden Age?

There are as many stories about when the Golden Age took place as there are people who write about it. It started in the early days of Hollywood, when the Star system first came in with Chaplin, Keaton, Pickford, Pauline Frederick, and many others.

A SEVEN PART SERIES ON JOHN WAYNE’S LAST MOVIE

Many people think The Shootist was John Wayne’s last film but that really was not the case.
Home For The Seabees was a film for the US Navy produced in 1977. Wayne agreed to do this movie because he admired the Seabees since he completed the movie, The Fighting Seabees in 1944.

"I'll Do It For Ya!"

A meeting with the Navy Brass turns into a movie about the Seabees. The Duke was a man of great enthusiasm that was easily seen and heard.

The Movie is a Go!

None of us had seen a script yet, but setting a date for shooting, and various other production matters had to be addressed. John Wayne had another agenda.

Be Close To Your Writers

The good news was that the script had arrived from Washington. The bad news was that the script had arrived from Washington.

A Script for a Legend

Despite our best efforts to insert Seabee history into a movie script that was not good enough for JW. He agreed to do it, "Whether it was a good one or a bad one".

The Duke Writes with Me

The Duke had a little stub pencil, like golfers use as he made changes to the script. Who better to write for John Wayne, than the Duke himself?

Where the Hell is Frederick?

"Oh, God," I thought, "He knows my name." Wayne was known to, occasionally, have a problem with names. He met so many people after all.

Wrapping Up The Movie

The shooting was complete. John Wayne was great as usual with his fans. He signed as many autographs and posed for as many pictures as time allowed. That's who he was!
